Beware of renting a vacation property directly from an owner
Rent-by-owner Web sites may offer great deals on vacation rentals, but they also open the door to scams. The property may not actually exist. Many Web sites don't guarantee that the advertised properties are real. Some sites recommend that the renter meet with the owner prior to sealing the deal, but that isn't practical for many vacationers. You may not get what you think you are getting. Photos and descriptions in the ads may not represent the true condition of the property. Your identity may be stolen. The renter usually must provide personal information, including credit card and sometimes bank information. To avoid these and other problems: Use a company that offers protection, such as Rentalo (http://rentalo.com), which rents apartments and villas around the world and offers $5,000 payment protection against rentals that turn out not to be legitimate. Or you may want to use a company that has been around for a while and has a good track record, such as Untours (888-868-6871, www.untours.com), which has been in business for 34 years and offers rental packages throughout Europe.
